After 34 years, 10 of which were spent in the hole

After 34 years, 10 of which were spent in the hole, our comrade, and Prison Radio correspondent, Shakaboona Marshall, walked out of prison on the morning of Wednesday, May 11th, and into the loving arms of his mother. Known to the movement as "Mama Pat," Patricia Vickers worked tirelessly for her son’s release, and for the dignity and humanity of all prisoners, helping to build a statewide movement for prisoner’s rights. She, along with others, has engaged in this protracted struggle for more than three full decades.

Shakaboona's lengthy and unconstitutional imprisonment, the solidarity and respect he cultivated with people inside and outside the walls, and his glorious release teach us so many things about how victories are won, lessons which we must study and be perceptive, strategic, and courageous enough to apply to our struggle going forward. Among them are: the organizing work he did from the cages, the impact of prisoners educating themselves and each other, how to put liberation theory into practice, the role of law and ideology, the centrality of incarcerated, formerly incarcerated and their loved ones being at the forefront, and how to work without, against, and within the state to achieve our goals.

Make no mistake - Shakaboona's release is a victory, and the sweet promise of what is to come: more court room victories, more statewide movement building, more changes in the laws allowing more and more of our people to come home to the families and communities that are working so hard to free them. May this victory galvanize and invigorate us as we continue to amplify the voices of prisoners and transform the laws of our nation. We must not leave any tactics on the table. We salute Shakaboona, his lawyers and the organizations and people that contributed to his freedom, a movement that he himself helped to build.

Sundiata Acoli Granted Parole!

Today, in 2022, Sundiata has been granted parole by the Supreme Court of New Jersey, thus overturning the denial of the Parole Board. Now at the age of 85, Sundiata may walk free alongside the company of his loved ones. It was the persevering commitment of abolitionists across decades, not to mention the indomitable spirit of Sundiata which endured in all of that time, which allowed today to be possible.

Naykima Hill just called in from WHV on behalf of Krystal Clark. Krystal Clark's health is quickly deteriorating and the prison is doing absolutely nothing to get her help. Krystal has been calling for several months letting us know exactly how the prison has HID her from inspectors so they don't see how bad she's doing. Their medical doctors at WHV have refused her to help her again and again, either out of neglect or ignorance. Since they can't help her, and refuse to allow her to receive any outside medical care, they are effectively killing her. And sadly, this is not the first death that has occurred at WHV from medical neglect. We've received reports from many inmates there about the death of a woman named Teresa Petto several months back where the guards have ignored the reports from her cell mate that she was bleeding out on the toilet. They chose to do nothing then, and they will choose to do nothing now. We cannot allow Krystal to die in prison. We must do everything we can to get her medical help, and released on medical commutation.
