After much consideration, Marvin “Shaka” Walke

After much consideration, Marvin “Shaka” Walker has accepted a plea bargain from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office. He is eligible for expedited parole (because he was a teenager when arrested). After four decades inside prison, we expect that with significant community support and programming, he will be released and return home to his family and friends.

The next steps are important.

We are all right there with Shaka, as he has been for us these many decades. If each of us can think of how we can support him in this time of transition, that would be wonderful.

If you are in California you can visit and write, and help him with his studies. He is preparing for his GED and Associates Degree. It is important to show up in court, and pack the court room on June 22nd. If you can’t make that date if you are too far away to come for the hearing, please consider donating to his legal defense fund and reentry fund.

It means a great deal to have family and friends and supporters in the courtroom, as we continue on this journey home.

We urgently need your support to help our sisters

We urgently need your support to help our sisters at Huron Valley. This facility houses a number of our correspondents, including Krystal Clark, Naykima Hill, Marcia Graham, and many others who have been bravely speaking out about the extreme medical neglect, physical abuse, moldy conditions, and various other grievances they have experienced.

Their stories are harrowing, and they have been calling on us to help them bring attention to the dire conditions at Huron Valley. Representatives O'Neal and Wilson are planning to visit the facility soon, and we need your help to make sure that they are aware of the situation and have all the information they need to take action.

Please fill out this Google Form (link in our bio) with your comments and concerns. Your comments will provide critical context for the representatives to consider upon arrival and give them a heads-up on what to look for. It is essential that we make our voices heard and advocate for change.

We are so grateful for all of the folks who showed

We are so grateful for all of the folks who showed up in San Jose to support Marvin “Shaka” Walker on April 20th.

Shaka’s new lawyer was approved by the judge, and we are optimistic that he will have a strong advocate in navigating the treacherous prison machine that cannot seem to let him go despite his conviction being overturned.

His next hearing will be June 2oth, and we hope to draw folks back in to stand with him again.

Shaka began this journey as a teenager, and has served over 43 years housed next to half a dozen men who were executed. A Black teenager shackled in the 1970s in front of an all white jury, he recieved a death sentence before his 21st birthday, and has survived as a shining, resilient spirit ready to help his family. It is past time for Shaka to be released, to come home to his community and his family.

Shaka's conviction was overturned because the San Jose DA unconstitutionally struck every Black person from his jury. We know that there are zero consequences for prosecutorial misconduct, and so do district attorneys. He has served 43 years on the basis of a racist trial, and the D.A. does not even have the dignity to release him after the Federal Court overturned the conviction. But we know Shaka will be released to freedom - and we will continue to stand with him. We are grateful to all of you who have supported him along the way.

Here at Prison Radio we know that bringing the voices of those inside to the airwaves is a sure fire way to honor their humanity. It is a key way to maximize their agency. It is an avenue for their voices to lead the movement. So they can define their own work and to tell the truth of this monstrous misuse of public funds. Without this window, the conditions, experiences, and the beautiful resilience would be kept hidden, and kept secret. We cannot build a world without prisons unless we let incarcerated people lead the public discourse.

Yes, this is always a call to alms. And we need some cash to literally keep the lights on. This work is complicated and expensive. We don’t have foundation funding. We need your help now more than ever. Please dig into your pockets and share with us what you can.

If you got this far, let me share with you what it means to keep people in touch with each other. First we have the broadcast studio and airwaves and the engineers that record and polish and edit the sound. Then we have a hard copy mailing list of 14,059 names, with every contact we have had and every donation since 1999. We have an active email list of 6,124 names. Keeping the mailings and the electronic information flowing requires infrastructure. We are upgrading our database to DonorPerfect which will require $4800 to transfer the files and $465 a month to keep it up and running, just for the software licenses. This shift means our staff will be able to spend more time organizing and supporting our correspondents. It also means we need to raise $10,380.

Frankly, we are always on the brink of running out of funds: because we are all in!
