“Cyntoia Free.”

Her name is Cyntoia Brown, and she has spent half her life in prison. Why? Because she shot and killed a man when she was 16 years old. Why? Because the men she killed was a pimp who raped her, exploited her, and planned to sell her like a loaf of bread.

Stars such as the popular singer Rihanna have raised their voices in her defense. In an Instagram posting, Rihanna wrote: “Imagine at the age of 16 being sex-trafficked by a pimp named Cutthroat. After days of being repeatedly drugged and raped by different men, you were purchased by a 43-year-old child predator who took you to his home to use you for sex.”

Cyntoia gathered her will, took his gun, and shot him. She was certified as an adult at the tender age of 16 and sentenced to 60 years in prison. Over half a million people signed a petition demanding her freedom, and just a few days ago, Cyntoia Brown had her sentence commuted by Tennessee’s governor.

Cyntoia Brown, now an adult woman of 32 years, is now free, free to leave a lifetime of nightmares, free to fly.

From imprisoned nation, this is Mumia Abu-Jamal.
