“The Trump Trial.”

Soon, the impeachment trial of an American president will begin, and the U.S. Senate will decide whether Donald J. Trump will be removed from office or acquitted of two articles of impeachment.

In the hands of Senate majority leader, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, all bets are on that he will scuttle the case if not dismiss it all together. That’s because no Republican leader really wants a trial, indeed, nor does Trump. They want this impeachment business to go away permanently.

Will there be witnesses? Probably not, for witnesses cause problems, for the impeachment process is a deeply political process, and as in all politics, the ends justify the means. Senator McConnell is a clever politician, not overly concerned with precedent. He cares about results as shown by his almost year-long hold on an Obama nominee to the U.S. Supreme court, an unprecedented act. The trial is coming, but its results may be predetermined before the process formally begins.
