RED ONION ACTION ALERT

Contact VA governor Greg Youngkin to advocate for the passage of legislation that restricts and reduces the use of solitary confinement

Solitary confinement must end and Gov Youngkin can do something about it. Youngkin has until March 24th to pass or veto them all. SB 1409 and HB 2647 have passed in each house respectively. These bills significantly curtail the use of solitary confinement in VA prisons. In 2024, Youngkin vetoed similar legislation. We cannot allow this to happen again.

We have until March 24th to agitate for the passage of this bill. This legislation would significantly improve the lives of those incarcerated in Virginia, we must do what we can to ensure our voices are heard on this matter. The following infographic comes from Interfaith Action for Human Rights (IAHR) and the Virginia Coalition on Solitary Confinement.

Sample script:

“Governor Youngkin, I am contacting you to express my support for the passage of SB 1409 and HB 2647. The continued use of solitary confinement within our carceral system must be interrogated and reformed. The passage of this legislation would be a much needed step in the right direction.

Please do not fail us again.

Sincerely,

We appreciate your continued commitment to advocate for change. To learn more about Red Onion and the state of the carceral system in Virginia, see below:
