Prison Radio

Dear Friend,

On Sunday an Oscar was awarded to Daniel Kaluuya for his role in “Judas & The Black Messiah” which told the story of 21 year old Black Panther icon Fred Hampton and the FBI campaign to undermine the party and literally kill him as he slept in his bed, drugged by an informant.

Truth is the first step.

Justice is the next.

It requires freedom for those that are still in prison.

Black intellectuals and community organizers were targeted for arrest and murder in the decades during which the FBI murderous COINTELPRO under J Edgar Hoover flourished.

Many Black Panthers are languishing and dying in prison to this day.

Mumia Abu-Jamal was targeted, followed, and harassed, and put on Hoover’s security index as a 15 year old, because he spoke out as a Black Panther.  We know that George Fencl and Frank Rizzo targeted Mumia because of his reporting.  We know that police inspector Alfonso Giordano promoted a false confession (never used at trial) in the week after Mumia’s being shot and arrested, to taint his case. To revoke his bail.  To continue the frame up of a courageous journalist.

Mumia’s uncompromising reporting earned him both censorship and the enmity of the State.  It was no accident that Mumia’s 1982 trial judge was Albert Sabo, who said a week before the trial “I am going to help them fry the n-word.”  The fact that he said this in front of another judge was documented by a court reporter and dismissed on appeal by PA Common Pleas Court judge Pamela Dembe. She stated that even if Sabo said this, it has not been shown that affected any of his rulings in Mumia’s trial.

This kind of institutional promotion of corruption is legion in the Philadelphia courts: they are willing to turn a blind eye to corruption in order to preserve the institution.  These institutions are the manifestation of genocide and slavery and they can not be tolerated or continued in this form.

Last week we saw a glimber of accountability in the Chauvin conviction. As we understand the racist corruption of police we have shift the lens to include corrupt prosecution and incarceration.

We cannot just “understand” what Frank Rizzo and J. Edgar Hoover did.  We have to act with that knowledge. This problem did not end in 1982.  Corruption has continued.

On Saturday people all over the world gathered to demand Mumia Abu-Jamal’s freedom and honor his 67th birthday. People in Oakland, Philadelphia, France, Mexico, Vienna, The Netherlands, Germany, and many other locations rallied for Mumia as he recovers from heart surgery. “Freedom is the Only Treatment” was the call demanding the immediate release of Mumia.

Now it is time for his release. Powerful demonstrations have:

  • Stopped his execution on two occasions
  • Convinced the US Supreme Court to overturn his death sentence
  • Won his release from solitary confinement
  • Secured the fast acting antiviral cure for Hep C, for Mumia and prisoners across the US
  • Won the parole of all of the remaining imprisoned members of the MOVE organizations
  • Forced the State to acknowledge that new evidence must be heard in court

We are demanding that the hospital officials and the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections do the following immediately:

1) Mumia must not be shackled to his hospital bed during his recovery.
2) Let Mumia speak with his family at length and regularly.
3) Let Mumia speak directly with his physician Dr. Ricardo Alvarez.
4) Let Mumia speak with his spiritual advisor Dr. Mark Taylor.
5) Provide the appropriate rehabilitation plan for his recovery

As he recovers he MUST have access to his physician, exercise, and a heart health diet.

Please continue to call and write to the PADOC and let them know we are watching and that “Freedom is the only treatment”:
