David has been moved into a medical isolation cell as part of VDOC’s mental health protocols to hunger strikes. These protocols are intended to break the hunger strike. They include being placed in a cell with the lights on 24/7, with access to basic necessities, such as toilet paper, restricted. His only indication of the passage of time is when the guards bring him a pillow and blanket at “night.” His access to the phone, through which he has done all his reporting with Prison Radio, has been cut off. Further, these protocols give VDOC officials the authority to design “incentives” to break the hunger strike. David is in a very desperate situation, and this treatment will not help him.
We’re asking you to write David a letter to break the complete isolation being imposed on him by VDOC, while reminding prison staff that there are people outside the walls concerned about his health and safety.

Express your sympathy but avoid saying anything you wouldn’t want a prison official to read. Try to give David a window into an experience outside of the one he’s forced to confront every day inside: discuss aspects of outside life, or write about your interest in music, or the outdoors. David is a huge fan of Tom Morello and Rage Against the Machine, and has spoken often of his desire to return to living in the woods of central Virginia.
Please take the time to write a letter. Knowing he has support outside the walls he is confined to will mean the world to David.
