Dear
Ekong Eshiet is on hunger strike and has been refusing meals since November 20th.
“The only option for me is, for me to get out of the hole, or for me to die.” –Ekong Eshiet
Prison Radio correspondent Ekong Eshiet is a fighter, a survivor, and a sensitive human being. He has endured terrifying and abusive conditions in Virginia’s Red Onion State Prison which he protested by setting the lower half of his body on fire. He put the entire system on blast by working with journalists, advocates, and organizations including Prison Radio. In retaliation, Virgina DOC sent him hundreds of miles further from his family to Westville Correctional Facility in northern Indiana.
In Indiana, he continues to be subjected to the torture known as solitary confinement. Ekong’s trauma haunts him. The horror of the prison system weighs on him every single day. He begs for mental health treatment, for therapeutic programing, to be let out of his cell and allowed to speak to other humans for more than one or two hours a week.
Listen to his latest commentary and hear the resolve in his declaration: “The only option for me is, for me to get out the hole or for me to die.”
Public pressure works.
Ekong needs to be released from solitary confinement. Ekong needs mental health treatment. Ekong needs your help to make these things possible.

Sample Script:
“Hello [Name and Title] my name is __________ and I am calling in concern for Ekong Eshiet (IDOC #304103) who started a hunger strike on November 20th. I am concerned about his wellbeing because IDOC is holding Ekong in held indefinitely in solitary confinement. IDOC is responsible for any harm that comes to Ekong as a result of his hunger strike and continued placement in solitary confinement. Ekong needs to be released from solitary immediately and transferred to Wabash Correctional Facility Special Needs Unit. Holding someone who has severe mental health diagnoses in solitary confinement is torture. Release Ekong from solitary and grant his request for a transfer!”
