Prison Radio
Thank you to our 2023 correspondents!
It was over 30 years ago when Noelle and I jacked up our limited credit card and borrowed $1000 to rent a digital audio tape recorder, wireless mics and receivers and fly from San Francisco to rural Pennsylvania to record Mumia Abu-Jamal at Huntingdon State Prison. This was the 1st time he had recorded for radio since his arrest. 1992 was before cell phones and GPS. We arrived, unloaded a pile of equipment, navigated the guards, asked them to hand the wireless mics around to the other side of the plexiglass that separated us. Most importantly, we got the guard to turn off the air conditioner that emitted a frighteningly loud and audio killing hum on that hot July day. That day we got the clean takes we needed.
SCI Huntingdon, non contact visiting room July 14, 1992.
Today, decades later, Mumia remains our lead correspondent: professional, succinct, insightful, dedicated, and full of revolutionary love and hope.
He is joined now by more than 100 other Prison Radio correspondents calling in and recording with us: dispatches from the other side.
As we approach the year’s end, I want to thank all of you who have given, all of you who are about to make a gift, and all the folks who call from inside and help us chip away at those concrete and steel walls.
In 2023, all of these correspondents have taken risks to share their stories and their truths with us. Let us take a moment to honor their work and their lives.

We are deeply inspired by Prison Radio correspondents: their commitment to the truth, their sacrifices, and their resilience.
Every call they make offers us on the outside opportunities to learn, to grow, and to stand in solidarity. And we listen, we share, and we act.
We bear witness to the human cost of the prison industrial complex. Shoulder to shoulder we tear down everything that has been constructed to separate us. We build a different world.
Please make a gift today to help us keep these lines of communication open. Every commentary breaks down the isolation: together we will build a better world.
Free them all!
