Kevin Cooper

This is Kevin Cooper, and I’m sending my respects and my appreciation to all of you, and to my cultural brother, Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Everything that is wrong in America is represented in what is wrong with America’s criminal justice system and in the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal. This modern day plantation that has devoured so many poor minority people and has turned them into modern day slaves must be fought against.

If slavery was deemed a peculiar institution back then, when people of that time were considered by people of today as being uncivilized, then this modern day slavery of these times is a very peculiar institution, when it is run, controlled, and maintained by people who consider themselves to be civilized.

It is up to us, like our abolitionist forebears of yesterday, to speak truth to power. We must abolish the death penalty, life in prison without the possibility of parole, and modern day slavery with the slave wages or no wages paid prisoners, and to do this is going to take all of us.  In struggle and solidarity from death row of San Quentin prison, I’m Kevin Cooper.
