Prison Radio
Steven Nicholson

Hello, this is Steven Lynette Nicholson again, here in Jackson, Michigan. Just promoting prisonradio.org, their greatness, their beauty, their sacrifice, just, you know, so. They sacrifice. Maybe somebody else can sacrifice and help them out. Donations are always welcome. Prisoner Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan, shout out to them too, great people. Love ’em, love you guys. This is the poem I call, “The Genesis of What If,” precursor to my “What If” poem.

Genesis of What If

What if cocaine and Xanax never hijacked my little brother’s membranes
In his memory lane?
His brilliant super brain illuminated
Like the Andromeda strain paid a death tax for a stopgap euphoric climax.
What if the four-fifth, with a fifth, was enough to dismiss
That little loop no longer exists,
His body lying in that casket?
His body lying in that casket.
What if his body embodied nothing but a shell, like a breadbasket for his conscience,
Now departed to heaven or hell?
What if my words were more than just ringing your bells and hell’s bells
As I attack the spiritual and leaving you thinking his talent and tactic
Is Machiavellian and tragic?
What if I was elaborate enough to establish that we are all travelers to this planet,
Born damaged but created before being born for royal standards?
What if I told you that heaven on earth exists if we banish egocentric,
Self-centered self-interests
In exchange for the principles and power of kingdom citizenship?
What if you don’t get what I’m saying?
And like Lucy, I got some ‘splaining to do.
Then come holla at me, dude, my door is always open to you.
