Larry Stromberg

Hello, everybody. This is Larry Stromberg at FCI Phoenix in Pennsylvania. This is my poem, “The Mirror Doesn’t Lie.”

The Mirror Doesn’t Lie

When I look into my prison cell mirror,
All I see is a man who has aged in the system.
I once was young, vibrant and ambitious.
The decades down has taken a toll on my soul,
Losing most of my loved ones along the way.
Dreams died, hopes faded.
Yes, the consequences of sin.
Eyes tired.
Weary in the ears.
Decades descending.
Still, I forge ahead push up after push up
Reading more than ever.
Writing has become my life force.
Praying like a warrior.
New dreams birthed,
Filing in the courts for some kind of rhythm.
The battle continues for redemption.
Seeking peace along the way for my guilty heart.
But the mirror doesn’t lie.
He reveals the truth,
All truth.
I’ve gotten old as time has consumed my youth.
Standing in my remorse amongst the ruins of my life.
Still alive, breathing it all in.
Heartbeat after heartbeat.
It’s hope on a tightrope.
Yes, the mirror doesn’t lie.
