When he was born on 13th July, 1948, his parents named him William R. Johnson, by father Lloyd Johnson and mother Lois Ethel Johnson. His name would later become Bilal Sunni Ali and it would long reverberate in the worlds of Black radical politics and music. Music moved him as a third grader when he picked up the clarinet and later, the tenor sax and the flute. Apparently he had a thing for woodwinds.
He started a band when he was twelve years old. His first band was named “The Symphony.” He and his band mates said their group played music from heaven. This was the same age when he met a man who wrote detective stories. His name? Gil Scott Heron. Gil Scott Heron later found fame as a forerunner of rap, a wonderful poet, and a singer of considerable range and power. A few years later, Sunni Ali and other band members would form “The Simba Drummers and Dancers,” where they wore dashikis or African-style garments for men. His fellow band mates included Eddie Adinola Knowles and Cosmic Charley Saunders.
When Bilal was 22, he joined the famous “Midnight Band,” which backed Gil Scott Heron. But he didn’t just join bands. As a teenager, he met Lumumba Shakur and Zayd Malik Shakur and also Sekou Odinga. These were the guys who helped found the Harlem and Bronx chapters of the Black Panther Party in New York. So Bilal Sunni Ali wasn’t just a talented musician. He was a revolutionary, as well. In 1975 he went underground and reportedly worked for Black freedom and national independence in the Black Liberation Army.
From his earliest to his latest years, he believed that music was a powerful tool of human healing. Sheik Baba Bilal Kumi bin Sunni Ali passed his last breath on December 30th 2024, surrounded by his many children, his numerous grandchildren, his ex-wives and his wives. He was surrounded by an ocean of love. Now he plays music with the ancestors. With love, not fear, this is Mumia Abu-Jamal.
