Dear friends in Sydney, on the move! I’m tempted to give that common Aussie greeting “G’day,” but it’s not a good day. It hasn’t been a good day for many, many years for me or my family. And it’s not a g’day for millions in America, in what I call the ‘prison house of nations,’ the United States of America. For example, did you know what jurisdiction has the highest number of juveniles held under life sentences; life for the rest of their lives with no opportunity for parole or release, in the world? That somewhat proud distinction goes to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
You notice I said, what jurisdiction? That means in Pennsylvania they have more juvenile lifers, not only than any other state in the United States, but of any other country in the world. That gives you some sense of the scope of what I call the prison house of nations, so I hope you’ll excuse me if I don’t say g’day.
