“Step One: Impeachment.”

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have a Christmas gift planned for U.S. president Donald Trump. It’s an impeachment, but Trump has a gift for them as well. It’s an acquittal in the U.S. Senate. At least that’s how I see it. I see no real way that a two-thirds majority of the Senate will vote for Trump’s removal, no way.

The great political scientist Niccolo Machiavelli, in his classic work The Prince wrote that it is better for a leader to be feared than loved. Trump has a whip hand over his party that few, if any, will dare to challenge. As long as he holds them, he is safe. Will public opinion change this equation? I don’t think so. This is as much of a done deal as can be doable.

And what does Trump care about an impeachment anyway? Nothing. Especially with an impending imminent acquittal down the line. So Trump will soon get two gifts for the holidays: an impeachment in the House and an acquittal in the Senate.
