Talking about Abolition by Sonali Kolhatkar

Dear Friend,

Award-winning journalist Sonali Kolhaktar’s new book, “Talking About Abolition: A Police Free World is Possible,” is a vital set of interviews with abolitionists who are working to dismantle policing and prisons in the US.

Order “Talking About Abolition”

I have to admit, sometimes it takes me a while to come along. I get stuck and have to be patient with myself and others and listen. When Jello Biafra and ‘Man is the Bastard’ of Alternative Tentacles Records (still a super strong supporter of Mumia) first proposed an album half-punk half-Mumia spoken word, I was not reluctant so much as Irish Catholic shy. The Dead Kennedys struck me as sacrilegious. Yes, I got over it, because the music was great.

I had the same reaction to “Abolition” when it was first trumpeted from the rooftops, I thought, “Really? Abolition of prisons?” It did not take long to get it, and you can read about my journey to the front lines as I am in conversation with Sonali. It is Chapter 4 of “Evolving Toward Abolitionism.”

Save the date: Sonali Kolhatkar, Robin DG Kelley and Ivette Ale-Ferlito are hosting a book launch on May 17 at the Burbank Public Library in Los Angeles.

“A clear, concise, and compelling argument for abolition: its social justifiability, practical feasibility, and moral necessity. Taken together, these interviews are a masterclass in justice-driven journalism.” – Jody Armour, Roy P. Crocker Professor of Law at the University of Southern California
