Mumia Abu-Jamal

Noelle Hanrahan: Juan Gonzalez was a member of the Young Lords. In the 1980s, as a reporter for the Philadelphia Daily News, he worked the same streets and stories as Mumia Abu-Jamal. He was his peer. Today, Juan Gonzalez is a columnist for the New York Daily News

Juan Gonzalez: Let me say, in the late 1970s, as a reporter at the Philadelphia Daily News, I was the only Puerto Rican reporter in the city at the time, and there were no associations of Hispanic Journalists. It was only the Association of Black Journalists, that existed. And Mumia was one of those who fought to open up the ABJ, to welcome me into it, and helped inspire the unity of all third world journalists. He’s one of the most brilliant and committed journalists that I ever met.
