Mumia Abu-Jamal

In celebration of African Heritage Month, for Profiles in Excellence we honor: Dr Huey P. Newton was born in 1942 and died in 1989. He co-founded the Black Panther Party in October, 1966, when he was just twenty-four years old, which became a national group in less than four years and had international offices in less than six.

Although born in Louisiana, he lived most of his life in Oakland, California. By his eleventh grade, he was illiterate, and his counselor scoffed when he expressed an ambition to go to college. Years later, after his years in the party, he earned a PhD. The Black Panther Party sparked activism from tens of thousands of youth from various communities on a host of issues, from Black self-defense to breakfast programs for children, to Black political and social empowerment. For Hard Knock Radio, this is Mumia Abu Jamal.
