I took a Sociology course through Albion College, and this poem was about that course:
To me, this course was about nourishing a new neurological route.
Flipped inside out, my heart’s ventricles should be tied in a knot.
But they’re not.
A new creation now ensues due to yous.
Yous arer the good news God has threw from heaven to us, subdued.
Subdued exuberance now exudes from us, once subdued, now schooled.
Not trained like dogs because you knew.
You knew that we are people too.
So, when I was asked,
“What has inside out meant to you?”
Oooh, my heart did a loop de loo,
and my cerebral cortex reflexed.
With the best rhymes I can pull from my rolodex,
in an effort to show all due respect.
But in an effort to manage my time like we do in our group sets,
out of all due respect,
let me regress
for being so loquacious.
But let me make clear with less than best analysis,
I hold this program in the highest regards.
It electroshocks my heart
from Professor X, I mean, Professor Scott.
to every student, every one of y’all.
We are like a team that wins rings.
We pass the ball to touch on several dilemmas that sever all.
But ain’t that the point to get sociological to create better societal conditions for all?
Even angels–literal–like Gabriel?
And our squad got a Gabrielle,
but we call her Gabby.
I don’t know if she’s Gabby but she’s silly and happy in a good way.
And it’s a good day when Lilly really lean into this race like a filly.
Leaves us with a sweet fragrance.
And this mind says reminiscent of Chris,
running for the love of it. Or like Lis running in love for Tara.
Or Amalia, a calmer, a farmer, and hair black as the dahlia.
Or Tiana, the anthropologic stunner.
what… wha… wha…what.
She loves the people’s like Donna love her brother.
Shed them tears girl, that don’t make you a sucker.
The same goes for Anna, fawning over a stranger.
That’s love like no other.
Dare I say, Jesus like culture?
And then Bella, quiet as ever
but then tears.
Since them dimples ain’t simple, like she’s smiling forever.
Smilin–that reminds me of Bree.
Maybe the most honest, infectious smile I’ve ever seen,
except for my Ella, my being, forever a queen like all the girls on this team.
And then [unintelligible] what’s that mean?
It’s a reminder for me of Miss Blanca, that’s big Griz, if you don’t know.
But she ain’t mean, she’s real cool. Not cool pose.
Another who don’t pose is Yaz, quick to throw blows for the squad she loves and knows.
Behind her tough rhyme though it’s clear her heart soars
just like Shay who roars, the lioness with a heart of gold
and intentions to be so bold in her career to help those she may never know
and help model love for her son to help him grow.
So bold.
And shouldn’t that be a similar goal for all of us, bro?
Our brothers from another mother, but we got the same father; don’t doubt it.
And with a bowl of porridge made just right,
and new ingredients like newfound sociologic eyesight and loved just right,
we can tame these bears and ride off into the night, with no fright, shining our light.
Sociology 2024- the Albion College course.
We’ve won a small battle in a much larger fight.
So, let’s never stop trying to make things right
and treat people just like we would like, aight?
