Krystal Clark is finally being heard

Greetings!

Krystal Clark, a Prison Radio correspondent since 2021, was finally heard by the Michigan legislature.

“I miss you all and please share the hearing with everybody…May God bless you all, I really really need help before it’s too late.” – Krystal Clark, from a recent letter

On February 24th, in a hearing of the Michigan House Oversight Committee, Rep. Laurie Pohutsky outlined issues that will be painfully familiar to anyone who has been listening to Krystal Clark. Pohutsky noted that when she visited Krystal she saw that the mold infestation in her body has progressed even past the extreme condition shown in the pictures.

“The growth is present in both ears. It has spread to the outer part of the ear. It is fuzzy. She also has a white rash or growth, it is difficult to tell, that has spread across her face. Additionally, her entire right arm, from the point where her sleeve ended to the tips of her fingers is incredibly swollen.”

In response to standing up for human rights, staff at Women’s Huron Valley are retaliating against Krystal and the other whistleblowers. Three days after the hearing, WHV staff used the pretext of invalid serial numbers to take wheelchairs from women with obvious disabilities. This is an especially egregious response given that a Disability Rights Michigan Report cited in the hearing alleged that women in wheelchairs frequently miss meals and almost never receive medication due to a shortage of wheelchairs and attendants.

HELP PUT A SPOTLIGHT ON THE CORRUPT WHV ADMINISTRATION:

  • Share the hearing widely so everyone sees the medical neglect of prisoners.

  • Call and email the prison administration

Keep the pressure on Women’s Huron Valley.

During his testimony, Ombudsman Keith Barber waved away issues of medical neglect and mistreatment, addressing concerns of cleanliness but claiming, “We have shortage in other areas, programming staff, mental health staff, those are significant issues that we’re not addressing. I think maybe some of these issues are more important than the conditions, the cleanliness issues that we’ve heard some things about.”

Krystal Clark first reported issues with mold in 2016. Ten years ago. Call Ombudsman Keith Barber and tell him that no one should be forced to breathe poison for ten years.

Call MDOC Director Heidi Washington, and demand that the Health Care Services Administrator (Marti Kay Sherry) provide medical care and disability accommodations for prisoners at Women’s Huron Valley.

Please email, call, and share the hearing widely.

During her testimony, whistleblower Lareisha Thornton, a former employee at WHV, stated, “From the time I started, until the time I departed, I have heard how Krystal Clark was a liar. Nothing she said was true. And, it’s so easy to believe it if you have nothing to go on. But, the pictures, that’s evidence. Clear evidence. That something’s wrong.”

Don’t let the courage of Krystal Clark and other whistleblowers be in vain.

Please help us keep sharing stories like Krystal’s. Donate to Prison Radio today.
