Sheik Bilal Abdul Salaam-Bey

This is Charley Hughes, better known as Sheik Bilal Abdul Salaam-Bey, currently housed at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility, in Hutchinson, Kansas. This is part two of my piece on captivities.

If the UN member countries had acted together, things in Iraq would have been different, because there would have been less death and hostility. Iraq would have had its traditional greatness till this day, and people wouldn’t have been forced to flee for fear of their lives, and the lives of their loved ones. The United Nations could have come up with a conflict resolution to bring peace amongst the two countries. They should have all control instead of the governments. They help unite nations, hence the name, not divide and conquer them.

People in Iraq are being held captive by a war of imperialism. The United States use drones and other weapons of mass destruction against these people, yet they call them terrorists. The definition of a terrorist is anyone who brings terror or fear to a large group of people. The minds of US soldiers are being held captive by the US government because they aren’t able to think for themselves. I appreciate the service of our soldiers, but they’re fighting the wrong fight.

Prisoners in the United States are also fighting in a war. We are at a war for education, health care, better living conditions and population control. Prisoner’s views towards correction officers would change if the officers have positive attitudes, proper communication skills, as well as coping skills. Even the guards are being held captive, because they are trained to view all prisoners the same, and it clouds their judgments on how to treat and interact with us. Society hears about prisoners harming guards, yet they don’t hear about what guards do to us that leads us to harm them. Some guards bring their problems from home to work, and take it out on prisoners. If we speak out against such abuse, we are cuffed up and taken to Seg (Administration Segregation) to be stripped searched then released an hour later. This is a form of intimidation and humiliation.

We need to restore democracy in the United States. Democracy meant freedom from war, freedom from oppression, freedom from imperialism. The rights that were declared in the Declaration of Independence gave Americans something to look forward to when they broke away from the British Crown in 1776. The people of the United States are the ones in power, because it takes our votes to make a change. The government cannot make certain decisions without the consent of the governed. The people have the right to be self-governed and independent. It’s time to break free from our chains of captivity. United we stand divided we fall. An injury to one is an injury to all. Thank you for your time, efforts, and energy.
