This Charley Hughes, also known as Sheik Bilal Abdul Salaam-Bey, a prisoner at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility in Hutchinson, Kansas. This piece is part one of my resolutions for the Free Kansas Movement.
Number One: The court imposes a national surcharge on bullet sales to offset health care and infrastructure costs. Therefore, be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement is committed to ending the damage done by firearms to our families, our communities, and our nation. Therefore, be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement further supports the National surcharge on ammunition. The proceeds of which could go toward our local and state health care needs and assistance to help alleviate the high monetary costs and gun violence.
Number Two: Support and end for police brutality and murder. Therefore, be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement is committed to ending police brutality in our community by starting Cop Watch programs. Therefore be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement we’re training our residents in our community on how to interact with each other so there will be less police involvement that can result in brutality and murder.
Number Three: Support an to end outrageous bails. Therefore, be it resolved that an individual is to be given a bail that is in the monetary range of his or her economic value or status. Therefore, be it resolved that the state legislator change the bail policy that will be fair and impartial.
Number Four: Decertification of law enforcement officers. Therefore be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement calls for all state governments to develop and implement an efficient and effective process to decertify law enforcement officers who violate the law or fail to meet minimum public standards for law enforcement professionals. Be it resolved at the Free Kansas Movement call for all state governments to report decertified officers to a safety certification index to ensure that decertification is effective across the state.
Number Five: Opposition to stacking charges. Therefore be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement stands opposed to prosecutors stacking charges. Be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement units would actively advocate against policies and practices, resulting in a stacking of charges by prosecutors at every level of government.
Number Six: Abolish private prisons. Therefore, be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement should work towards putting an end to state prisoners being transferred to private prisons. Be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement should work towards having private prisons abolished.
Number Seven: Innocent inmate compensation. Therefore, be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement will advocate for the implementation throughout Kansas of Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Through a state Innocent Inmate Compensation Act it will compensate innocent inmates who were wrongly convicted because of failures in the criminal justice system, and through state legislation requiring compensation to these inmates. Compensation should be $1,000 per day.
Number Eight: Support the trial of one’s peers. Therefore, be it resolved that the Free Kansas Movement calls for state government officials to allow those on trial to be tried by a jury of their peers that come from the same economic, social, religious, historical and racial community. Be it resolved that those on trial should have attorneys of their choice, and be free from imprisonment while awaiting trial. This concludes part one of my resolution.
