Raymond Eugene Jenkins

This is Raymond Jenkins from Corcoran State Prison. Today’s topic is “Did you get your New Year’s resolution?” The reason why I choose that is because we always — when the new year come — we always say, “This is my New Year’s resolution,” but then we doesn’t not do what we said we were going to do for the new year. So, the reason why I’m speaking on that is, how serious are you when it comes to your New Year resolution? Do you just say it, just to be saying something? Or do you say it to mean it, to get it done? Because every year we need to change the way we thinking, the way we feel, the way our motivation and how we treat other people.

So, what we, you know, I’m looking at some time we get off the subject as New Year Resolution, because we take it as a celebration — that’s good — but then once we get through with the celebration, we forgot what we said we were going to do; as like losing weight or getting a better job, respecting my parents better, respecting my husband right, or respecting my wife. We get off the topic. And the whole thing of the New Year resolution is to — what do you need to do better that you feel that you didn’t do in the year that’s going away? And we forget what it stands for.

We forget why it’s called New Year resolution. It’s a lot of things that we don’t think about that we need to do. And that’s the main thing, is to start thinking better. And I hope, and wish that everybody that get they New Year resolution, and be able to proceed and be responsible and to be positive; what we call be positive in the new year, in 2025. We have a new President, 2025. We gonna have a new “Super Bowl” champion, could be repeat for Kansas City, or can be a brand new one. And we gonna have a new baseball World Series in 2025, so we’re going to have a lot going on.

And also we’re going to have the negative part, of course. You know, it’s always the negative part, but we have to have the positive side to overwhelm the negative part. So my thing is to always be yourself.  If you weren’t yourself in 2024, here is a new year that you can be yourself so you could be — if you weren’t helping people in 2024, here it is you can start helping people. If you didn’t have a job, here it is, that you can go out there and create and get the job that you want.

Being a good father, being a good husband, being a good wife and a good mother, all that can take place now if you was not doing that. If you were thinking about breaking the law, 2025 should tell you that you don’t want to — you want to be able to have your freedom. Because that’s the main thing in the prison system we think about a lot. What can we do better this year that we didn’t do last year, and what would make us never go back out there and hurt or harm or commit any crime, because we said we love our freedom. And we talked about our freedom, we talked about being better, going into community, helping others. So that’s the main focus should be for 2025.  And go out there and do it. Don’t just say it. Do it.
