Prison Radio

Behind the Curtain: Geneva to Virginia

Dear Friend,

So far in 2025, Prison Radio has aired 106 commentaries from our correspondents. We have gained half a dozen new correspondents, who have added their voices to the decades long oral tradition here at Prison Radio. These voices are soaring over the prison walls because of our work – and I do mean OUR work. We could not have done this without you.

Here is what you have made possible this year!

Prison Radio has visited Mumia Abu-Jamal 15 times so far in 2025 – offering critical support to our lead correspondent as he navigates his legal and health challenges – and continues to build his body of intellectual work.

Noelle Hanrahan of Prison Radio and Saleem Holbrook and Bret Grote of Abolitionist Law Center presented this at the UN Human Rights Committee during the 4th Annual Session of the International Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in Law Enforcement.

While Mumia suffered a big set back at the PA Supreme Court this spring, we remain steadfast and unwavering in our commitment to his freedom, and we know you stand with us. Click here for a free “Ten Things You Can Do To Free Mumia Abu-Jamal” poster.

In February, Prison Radio released a new Bandcamp album, On Red Onion with a special collection of commentaries reporting from Red Onion Prison on the abhorrent conditions in VA’s infamous supermax. This album allows people – and radio stations – to easily access these breaking reports that would otherwise be lost from the public discourse. Our correspondents have been reporting from Red Onion for years – which would not be possible if you had not supported our work of publishing these stories.

Here is a quick overview of some of our new correspondents (so far) – please listen to their work and share with your friends.

  • Jermaine Dickerson has begun his work with Prison Radio from Stillwater, MN reporting on medical abuse and his parole journey

  • Steven Carl Allwine also reports from MCF Stillwater, covering ongoing prosecutorial misconduct

  • Todd Robinson analyzes entrenched power dynamics and ethical dilemmas plaguing our criminal punishment system

  • David Annarelli reports from Virginia’s Lawrenceville Correctional Center on VADOC corruption.

  • Donnell Hickman continues our coverage from the ground at Red Onion Supermax in the remote mountains of West Virginia.

  • Harlequin provides essential commentaries on ongoing injustices in Pennsylvania’s prisons

Other Updates

The Harvard Inquest published an article on the Red Onion story this past February. “When Fire is the Only Way Out” by Dr. Jennifer Black and Noelle Hanrahan, Esq. provides key insights on the pervasive injustices at Red Onion, highlighting the critical work of Prison Radio correspondents in exposing the abuses.

In addition to our powerful legion of remote volunteers, we have several folks who show up in-person in our Philadelphia and SF offices to keep our work churning out. Our Philly volunteers recently helped inventory the cell contents of our lead correspondent Mumia Abu-Jamal, after SCI Mahanoy waged war on his books. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here. We also welcome college students to join our summer intern program. We can’t offer payment, but are happy to work with your university if you have a program that offers you payment or credit. If you are interested in an internship with us, fill this form or share with anyone who might be interested.

We continue to have events around the country (and in Europe) promoting Mumia’s new book (co-edited with Jennifer Black) Beneath the Mountain: An Anti-Prison Reader. If you don’t have your copy yet, click here to order now!

Thanks for walking this road with us, and consider making a gift today. You can give online here, mail a check to Prison Radio P.O. Box 411074, S.F., C.A.94141 or check out other ways to give here

This work is exhilarating, and takes material support. We have no large foundation support and rely on our committed supporters to help us keep our phone lines open and our rent paid. Please make a gift today of $150, $35, $500 or click here to explore other ways to give.

Here is what your gifts will do:

  • $50 covers our weekly correspondence with correspondents online and via mail
  • $100 will fund a week of our special recording phone line
  • $250 will allow us to publish action alerts to organize resistance to crises
  • $500 funds for editing and publishing one commentary (and we publish over 250 a year!)

Please stand with Prison Radio, as we listen, heal, and resolve to move beyond incarceration. The first step is freedom. The next step is abolition.
