Biography
Kevin “Rashid” Johnson was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1971. He defended his dignity consistently from an early age. He was precocious in his academic skills but clashed perpetually with authority figures. He was in and out of disciplinary institutions already in his teen years, and has been uninterruptedly incarcerated since he was about 20. He continued his struggles while in prison, effectively representing his fellow prisoners in their clashes with guards. Over the years, his resistance evolved from direct defiance, toward litigation and political organizing. In 2005, he co-founded the New Afrikan Black Panther Party (NABPP) — Prison Chapter. Between 2012 and 2018, he was “interstate compacted” from Virginia to Oregon to Texas to Florida back to Virginia, and then to Indiana to Ohio and again back to Virginia. In 2020, splitting with the NABPP, he founded the Revolutionary Intercommunal Black Panther Party. He has written numerous articles both on prison abuse and on political questions. These can be seen at https://rashidmod.com/, which also includes a “gallery” of his drawings. He is the author of two books: Defying the Tomb (2010) and Panther Vision (2015). Since October 2021, he has been suffering from cancer for which the authorities blocked treatment for 18 months. He currently writes poetry while working on his autobiography.
