Yesterday was Mumia's Birthday! While we recognize and celebrate this special moment in the life of our comrade, teacher, elder, and friend let us also take up the mantle of resistance to state violence that so many of our elders in the movement have taught us.

All over the world, Mumia's supporters are celebrating this Birthday of Resistance, and organizing autonomous actions toward a common goal - Freedom. It is long past due but it's not too late.

Come Join Prison Radio, we need you! Our mission is to amplify the voices of people in prison. We are working on closing the gap between inside and outside. It can be for 3hrs a week or 30hrs a week. We have remote opportunities as well as on-location in our studios in Philadelphia (Frankford 19124) and San Francisco (The Mission 94110).

-Design and Push out cutting-edge information on social media to engage an ever-widening community of allies and activists
-Help build and maintain a tiny but mighty non-profit organization
-Collaborate with our multi-generational team and passionate folks in the movement
-Talk directly with and have amazing conversations with incarcerated journalists, poets, and artists nationwide
-Combine theory and practice. You will have the opportunity to use your political skills to make concrete change.

We require dedication to challenging mass incarceration by amplifying the voices of prisoners. It is essential. We want to hear from you if you have energy, self-motivation, and want to work collaboratively. Please share widely in your networks and communities!

If you think you can give us a few hours a week, please fill out our volunteer form in our linktree (link in bio!) or our internship form (if you are looking for more on the order of 5-30 hours a week). The French movement for Mumia's freedom has gathered thousands of petitions in support of Mumia Abu-Jamal. These will be presented to District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office during a rally and march in the City Hall area.

A charter bus will bring people from New York City and Boston to Philadelphia for the afternoon rally and evening program. Get more info by following the Linktree link in the post!

Prison Radio is sharing an abbreviated version of a press release covering recent racist incidents at SCI Rockview in PA and the organizing to demand accountability. We are reaching out to people incarcerated at Rockview as well as recently transferred folks, inviting them to call, in hopes of hearing commentaries from them.

Benner Township, PA.-

On November 24th, 2023, imprisoned people at SCI Rockview found two nooses hanging in the CO’s office, displayed visibly for many prisoners to see. When the prisoners asked the staff why the nooses were hung, they were told it was a joke.

By December 4th, prisoners filed a grievance to document what they saw, noting that the hanging of the nooses was “unethical, racially motivated, hateful, [a] deliberate debasement of black inmates" and “unsafe for inmates, staff, [and] the whole prison in general.” In the grievance, they demanded that Sgt. Mosser and CO Richard be fired and investigated for a hate crime, and for CO Kirchner to get therapy. Captain Andrews, the head of security, denied the grievance.

The sergeant and COs are still working in the prison to this day, with no repercussions...

As of March 10th, prisoners have reached out to Pennsylvania officials at the Dept. of Corrections in a letter campaign, sending 100 copies of the grievance. Copies of the letter also were mailed to Governor Shapiro, Senator Fetterman, Senator Street, and various advocacy groups. The demands for relief in the original grievance have now become the platform of demands for this campaign. About 20 of the 100 letters were withheld by the prison.

Activists on the outside are joining forces with prisoners to elevate their demands, flooding the phone lines of DOC offices, assisting with outreach to media, and circulating the stories of prisoners who have found unity in opposition to the facility's virulent institutional racism.

In any other workplace, hanging a noose would be grounds for immediate termination. However, Nicki Paul, the superintendent's assistant and "grievance coordinator" informed the public that they self-investigated their staff and found they did nothing wrong.

I love getting calls from Bilal, a regular correspondent with Prison Radio. He consistently records moving, incisive pieces on the state of the American carceral system, reflecting his study, observations, and criticism from inside prison.

He recently wrapped up his four-part series entitled Captivities, which he based on a course he took through the College Guild, which offers free courses for incarcerated people.

Listening to and watching the progression of this series over the last few months has given me a unique opportunity to witness the consciousness-raising power of political education. I am grateful to learn from Sheik Bilal in this process and I wanted to share that experience with all of you.

In his commentaries, Sheik Bilal unpacks the trauma of juvenile detention and analyzes its effects on the “revolving door” of the prison system and the dynamics of recidivism. His audio essays provide a space for him to imagine and experiment with solutions to these thorny problems:

“A lot of adult prisoners were held captive as juveniles….The best way to reach juveniles who are being held captive in the numerous detention centers and facilities across the United States, is by having someone who has been through the same struggle and understands their pain, speak to them in a clear and concise way, and become their mentors.”

Since January, Prison Radio has aired over 65 commentaries from people in prison. These voices are soaring over the prison walls because of our work - and I do mean OUR work. We could not have done this without you.

Here is what you have made possible this year!

The Mumia Abu-Jamal Emergency Medical Defense Fund (Official 2024) was launched to support the critical health needs of our lead correspondent. Mumia’s cardiac health is precarious and requires appropriate dietary and exercise opportunities. This campaign, your calls have moved the prison authorities and actually shifted what food he has to eat (more salad and whole wheat bread). They gave him access to an elliptical machine. You made calls and wrote letters, and over 352 of your gave us life sustaining gifts.

The state of PA would be happy to let him die, and we will not allow that to happen. It was our collective vigilance that kept him alive under the 1995 & 1997 death warrants, through his treatment for chronic Hep C, and now post-double bypass heart surgery. We know that only our ongoing vigilance will bring him home. We need to keep the pressure on.
