Biography
Ekong is a devout Muslim who grew up in Danville, Virginia. He is the son of Marsha Pritchett & Ekong Eshiet Sr. Brother of Akon Eshiet, Breon Eshiet, Ben Eshiet, and Aaliyah Eshiet. Ekong is a Nigerian name which means warrior. Ekong was one of more than a dozen men who self-immolated in Red Onion State Prison in fall of 2024. While in the infirmary recovering from burn wounds he met Kevin Rashid Johnson, himself recovering from a 70+ day hunger strike, who put Ekong in touch with outside support. Ekong was vocal about the torture and abuse inmates were subjected to at Red Onion, and in retaliation he was transferred to Indiana. In Indiana he continued to be subjected to prolonged and indefinite solitary confinement which he continued to protest.
With support from Prison Radio listeners, UPROAR, IDOC Watch, and advocates across the US, Ekong won his demand to be transferred back to VA. After being transferred several times within the state, he is now being incarcerated at Keen Mountain in the Western Region of VADOC. Ekong continues to fight for humane treatment.
Ekong loves basketball, football (especially the Gators), baseball, Lil’ Durk, Juice WRLD, and horses.
